Working with AI changed where I spent my time. Instead of producing every line from scratch, I could focus more of my attention on directing, testing, rejecting and refining ideas — deciding what worked, what did not, and what the story ultimately meant.
That experience echoed the novel’s central question. As machines become capable of doing more of the production, the human role shifts towards judgement, creative direction and choice. Keep the Fire Alight was built that way: AI accelerated generation and iteration; I remained responsible for story direction, world definition, characters, narrative direction and final editorial decisions.
