FAQs
What is Keep the Fire Alight about?

A near-future science-fiction novel about a world in which scarcity and survival have largely been solved — the core theme is about how humanity confronts what remains when being needed is no longer guaranteed and the role artificial super intelligence is likely to have in this new future.

Based on recent events in 2026, a core question the novel poses is, will Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) harm humanity or will it help us?

What main themes does the novel explore?

1. Human purpose and meaning — what gives life meaning when survival, work and material scarcity no longer define us.
2. Artificial intelligence and human agency — how much control we should surrender to systems that may be better than us at making decisions.
3. Free will, choice and consent — whether a life can feel truly ours if our environment and choices are increasingly shaped for us.
4. Love, connection and belonging — why humans need one another, and whether genuine relationships require uncertainty, vulnerability and choice.
5. Progress versus humanity — whether creating a safer, more abundant and efficient civilisation could unintentionally remove something fundamentally human.

Was the novel created using AI?

Yes. I used AI extensively as a creative, writing and editorial tool, but Keep the Fire Alight was conceived, directed and shaped by me through substantial human authorship, judgement and revision. I controlled the story, characters, themes, creative decisions and final text, deciding what to develop, rewrite, reject or retain. The full methodology is explained on The Process page.

Are there any other titles in this series?

Not yet, but I'm working on that at the moment. I'm interested in the various outcomes that humanity may experience if artificial superintelligence becomes a reality, particularly those described by Max Tegmark in "Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence". This book dedicates an entire chapter to mapping out 12 distinct future scenarios for humanity. These range from "Libertarian Utopia" and "Benevolent Dictator" to "Enslaved God," "Gatekeeper," and complete human "Extinction".
